Managed, AI-Powered Customer Experience

AI is everywhere. Everyone’s selling it and everyone’s buying it. But buying AI isn’t the same as having something that works, and keeps working. That’s the gap Helm exists to close.

What’s happening with AI is not new. We’ve seen this with almost every technology that’s come before it.

Something new and shiny arrives.
People are scared it’s going to replace them.
They eventually adopt it because it works.
Everyone else does the same until it becomes a part of everyday life.

It happened with the printing press, the ATM, the internet, and now it’s happening with AI. The difference is that AI is growing at a speed that makes people squirm in their office chairs, and it’s going so fast that a lot of corporate South Africa has no idea what to do with it. But the hype is so high that there’s this obligatory pressure to do something with it.

Why?

Because AI is everywhere. Your boss’s boss knows what it is. Everyone's selling it and everyone's buying it, but the problem is that once your card has been swiped on that AI product, all the salespeople disappear and it's just you and your team against a web chat, an FAQ section, and 500,000 unhappy customers.

And that's precisely the problem that Helm exists to solve. Not by selling you AI – everyone's doing that. We use AI to improve your customer experience, and we manage that service end-to-end so you don’t have to lift a finger. You just sit back and watch while your partnership with Helm quietly pays for itself.

Before we get into what Helm actually does, we want to clear something up:

WE DON’T JUST  SELL AI.
WE DID THAT 10 YEARS AGO.

We design and build
AI-powered customer experiences
that we manage end-to-end.

We’re not the type to take your credit card details and watch you ride off into the sunset. In fact we don’t even take credit cards. We partner with our clients to make sure they get a proper return on their investment.

Do we use AI? Of course we do. We believe in our technology as much today as we did when we built Helm Engine in 2016.

The difference now is that we manage the whole process end-to-end from the first line of strategy to the millionth customer conversation. And our goal is ultimately quite singular – to improve the experience for the person at the other end of the screen. In practice, that breaks down into three things:

1. We design and automate the customer journey end-to-end.

Not a chatbot bolted onto whatever process you already had, but the whole conversation, rebuilt properly around AI from the ground up.

2. We manage your model and infrastructure choice for you.

Frontier, small, closed, or open source, whichever actually fits your data, your budget, and your risk appetite.

3. We deliver and maintain it at scale.

We prove this in production, not just in a demo. We make sure that whatever works beautifully for a hundred customers still works when you grow to a million.

The Industries We Work In

This is not necessarily a question of verticals, it’s more a question of scale. Wherever customer experience automation in Africa moves a real needle (cost, retention, revenue) there's almost certainly a case for our solutions. There are, however, eight industries where we do most of our work:

Financial Services

AI-powered chat is quietly becoming the future of finance, whether the industry's ready to admit it or not. Half of one major South African bank's customer service now happens on WhatsApp. Turns out people trust a message thread more than a call centre queue.

Telecommunications

South African telcos have a serious CX problem, and everyone with a SIM card already knows it. More than half of customers will abandon a brand entirely after one bad experience. In an industry built on retention, that's not a metric, it's a warning.

Retail

South Africa runs on WhatsApp – groups, memes, work chats, and increasingly, customer service. Over half of South Africans now prefer it to phone, SMS, or email for service and deliveries, and AI can cut response times from 12 minutes to 12 seconds while deflecting more than half of routine queries.

Utilities

When the lights go out or the water runs dry, people reach for their phones. Utilities are grudge purchases at the best of times, so every outage and billing error makes the angry angrier. Get the response right, and the savings aren't small. We're talking tens of millions saved annually for one client alone.

Healthcare

Admin does not save lives. South Africa's healthcare workers are already stretched thin, and for every hour spent with a patient, roughly two are lost to paperwork. Every form automated is an hour handed back to actual care.

Government

Government departments are drowning in queries, and every South African has lived it — the queue around the block at Home Affairs, the SASSA line at dawn, SARS eFiling buckling under load. Most of those questions don't need a human. They need a well-designed digital channel that hasn't been built yet.

Automotive

Great cars don't drive sales, great conversations do. The average buyer spends 48 days researching before they commit, and somewhere in that window there's a moment of near-decision where a slow response loses the sale. AI-powered chat is in that conversation from first click to signed contract.

Logistics

"Where is my order?" is, statistically, the single most common question a logistics call centre will ever field. More than half of all customer contact boils down to exactly that. Answering it well, on the channel customers already use, can save up to R30 per interaction.

Multilingual. Multichannel. Multimodal. Multimodel.

Most platforms that call themselves "AI-powered" bet everything on one language, one format, one model, and one channel, hoping nobody in South Africa notices how little of the population that really serves. Our technology was built for diversity, and diversity of communication. Helm Engine is proudly:

MULTILINGUAL

Thanks to our Natural Language Understanding capability, our solutions are available in all 11 official spoken languages of South Africa (and more). Not just translated after the fact – understood natively, in the language the customer chose to use, or even a mix of multiple languages (an SA speciality).

MULTICHANNEL

Our solutions live wherever your customers already are, not wherever's easiest to build. WhatsApp, Telegram, Facebook Messenger, Microsoft Teams, Freshdesk, native apps, websites, the lot. The channel sometimes changes, but the intelligence underneath it doesn't.

MULTIMODAL

A conversation isn't always just words. Helm Engine can receive, process, and distribute info across plain and rich text, images, graphics, video, and PDFs. Sometimes customers send photos of broken products, screenshots of error messages, and voice notes instead of typing.

MULTIMODEL

While Helm Engine is fully capable of building a private, proprietary model, we understand that using larger frontier models is sometimes the right call. So we’re primed to work with frontier, small, closed, or open-source models based on what fits your data, your budget, and your risk appetite.

Scale and Impact

23

99.9%

uptime

DStv Logo

We helped them turn WhatsApp self-service into its number one channel, handling 1.6 billion messages since 2019, supporting 11.2 million unique customers at a CSAT score of 84%. We've also helped them generate 250,000 new leads along the way. That's more than just a chatbot answering FAQs, it's a full sales engine inside a messaging app.

Capitec Logo

MoneyUp Chat has brought financial education to over 300,000 people, with 91% of registered users starting a course and completion rates sitting between 92% and 97% per challenge - rare numbers for educational content.

Eskom Logo

We helped them revamp their digital assistant Alfred, processing 100 million messages and saving millions along the way. With 260,000 average monthly users at 99% uptime, this has made important routine interactions a breeze for both Eskom and their user base.

Telkom Logo

They saw a fourfold increase in leads and a fivefold increase in self-service usage year on year, with cost per lead dropping by a factor of four.

MTN Logo

Our omnichannel overhaul with MTN was built on 3,280 hours of research, 150 customer interviews, and 4,350 surveys, mapping nine current-state journeys that printed out stretched twelve metres across a wall. The bottom line is that we reduced the upgrade time to just over 20 minutes.

Awards and Recognition

We're proud of our work, and it’s nice to have some silverware to show for it, too. So many of our awards were won in partnership with our amazing clients, based on the work we have co-created with them. And occasionally we have been fortunate enough to be recognised for our impact as an organisation.

2025

2025 was a genuinely good year. Helm picked up Best AI-Powered Customer Experience Solution (South Africa) at the MEA Markets awards, and both Best AI Customer Experience Company (Africa) and the Marketing Automation Innovation Award at the Business Excellence Awards.

At the Smarties Sub-Saharan Africa awards, the DStv Digital Agent brought home gold for Diversity & Inclusive Excellence, silver for AI Marketing, and bronze for Personalisation.

The years before that weren’t too bad either.

Our Philosophy

Customer experience has moved through three distinct eras.

1. Pre-2000s, it was entirely human.

Back then, you had almost no control as a customer. You couldn't look anything up yourself, compare your options, or get anything done without someone's help. So the quality of an experience came down to how good that person was at making up for your powerlessness. The better the bank teller or the shop assistant, the better the experience, because they were your only route to getting anything done.

2. Digital transformation flipped that.

For the last twenty years, every storefront and workflow got raced onto a screen, and suddenly you didn't need someone's help to check your balance or place an order – you could just do it yourself. Value shifted from "how good is the person helping me" to "how much can I do without needing anyone at all."

3. Now.

Digital transformation made things faster in South African enterprises, but it also quietly removed the person who used to help you. AI is what puts that person back. Not literally, but functionally. A good AI-powered assistant can explain, reassure, and adapt the way a good employee once did, at a scale no employee ever could. Value today isn't about how slick the screen is. It's about whether the thing on the other end of the conversation understands you and helps.

To be clear, that's not about replacing the humans still in the building either. It's about giving them power back. Every repetitive question answered by an assistant is a question your best people never have to answer for the thousandth time. What's left for them is the work that needed a person in the first place: the complicated cases, the upset customers, the moments that genuinely call for judgement. Good AI doesn't shrink the human role. It clears the noise around it.

That's why we've never called ourselves an AI vendor. A vendor sells the model and moves on. We design, build, and manage AI-powered customer experiences end-to-end, because putting the human touch back into a digital experience isn't a one-time thing, it's an ongoing job, which is exactly why we call ourselves a managed AI partner, and stay in the relationship long after the deployment.

If you've read this far, you already know the problem:

AI is everywhere.
Everyone's selling it.
Everyone’s buying it.

But buying it is not the same as having something that works, and keeps working.

That gap between the AI you bought and the customer experience you actually need is the one we exist to close.

Twenty-three years, 500 million users reached, and a handful of awards later, our value is the same as it's always been: not a tool, a partnership. We design it, we build it, and we stay to manage it. We're the large enterprise AI partner South African businesses call on for CX innovation in Southern Africa, when they need it to keep working, not just switch on.

We’re ready to talk when you are.

FAQ's

What does Helm do?

Helm designs, builds, and manages AI-powered customer experiences end-to-end. We don't just sell AI and disappear — we stay in the relationship, running the customer journey, the model choice, and the day-to-day performance of it, so businesses get a working AI customer service solution rather than a tool that quietly stops delivering value six months in.

Which industries does Helm work with in South Africa?

We focus on eight: Financial Services, Telecommunications, Retail, Utilities, Healthcare, Government, Automotive, and Logistics — though the real qualifier isn't the industry, it's the scale. Wherever a South African enterprise serves large volumes of customers or employees, there's usually a case for AI customer experience solutions built specifically for South Africa's market conditions.

What is a Digital Agent, and how is it different from a chatbot?

A chatbot answers a scripted question and stops there. A digital agent (or intelligent assistant) understands intent, adapts across languages, hands off intelligently between self-service and a human when it needs to, and improves over time based on real conversation data. One is a decision tree. The other is a system that gets better at its job.

How does Helm support all 11 official languages in South Africa?

Through Helm Engine's natural language understanding, which was built to be multilingual from the ground up rather than translated after the fact. Our multilingual AI assistants understand South Africa's eleven official spoken languages natively – including conversations that switch between two or three languages in a single sentence, which is normal here, not an edge case.

How can my business start a pilot with Helm?

Talk to us. We'll look at your interaction volumes, your current channels (WhatsApp digital agents  are usually where South African enterprises see the fastest return) and where the friction actually lives, then tell you honestly whether a pilot makes sense and what it should focus on first.
